I looked for 4 cardinals with good odds of becoming pope. Those 2 had AA rodden rating, I hoped to get 4 charts in that but I'll share it anyways. What I imagine is a standard way of primary directing(I just finished Martin's Gansten's book)

Cardinals under the age of 80 at the death or resignation of a Pope elect his successor.

Thanks. You have set us up really nicely for a discussion on this.

Just wondering what happened to the Latin Americans? Odilo Pedro Scherer (Brazil, 63) is generally regarded as Latin America's strongest candidate. Archbishop of Sao Paulo, largest diocese in the largest Catholic country, he is conservative in his country but would rank as a moderate elsewhere.

Another Brazilian that is being touted is Joao Braz de Aviz

http://iglesiadescalza.blogspot.co.uk/2 ... -21st.html

There is also the Italian-Argentine Leonardo Sandri, now heading the Vatican department for Eastern Churches.

After Europe Latin America is the biggest grouping of cardinals by national origin.

Here are the latest odds from Paddy Power:

Somehow though I dont think the College of Cardinals with be considering this much in their deliberations. :)

I think a look at the chart for the Vatican City may be useful:
Image
While he is an obvious choice Scola does have very strong links to the Vatican City chart.
Image
Jupiter is transiting his 10th house (and the Vatican chart)

Bertone's ASC is close to the ASC of the Vatican city chart. His ASC is also conj the Vatican city Lot of Fortune. Jupiter is currently squaring his ascendant and opposing his Sun. Its also trining his Moon.

scola does have close links with the vatican chart. one wonders about that close square between scolas mars and vatican sun though...then we have vatican mars on scolas uranus... mars rules scolas 3rd and 8th.. something about all the problems to do with sex that seems to stand out at this moment in the church history as well, but maybe they always have had this type of history which periodically rears its head.. mars-saturn 135 in the vatican chart with mars in it's 12th house.. however, the many close links between the vatican and scola are undeniable..

in some obvious respects the cross over with bertone's chart are easier and more pleasant..although not as many perhaps, the angles in the same place is very favourable in itself..

although we don't have an actual time for peter turkson, he also has some noticeable links back to the vatican chart, his venus/saturn conjunction on the vatican ascendant in particular and 2ndly - his jupiter on the vaticans saturn, the reverse of scola..

the cross aspects with the vatican chart and ouellet are also very pronounced in spite of not having a time for him as well.. born a day apart - suns conjunct one another, ouellets venus conjunct vatican moon, and his saturn exact opposite vatican saturn, mars conjunct mars and ouellets mercury fairly close conjunction to vatican jupiter.. all in all the cross aspects look very strong and relatively positive here too..

while it does no good to bemoan the fact we don't have actual birth times for some of the front runners, it would be most helpful if we did! it will be difficult to pick a winner off the data we have.. i am curious if there is a date into the future when the decision is being made and if that is public knowledge? that would be a helpful date to have as i suspect the transit data, not to mention all the other data off that date would be very helpful..

Marc Ouellet has
Transit Jupiter conjunct natal Uranus

(his interview is gonna be on the CBC news in just a few minutes now)

now if we want we...
can primary direct Jupiter to Uranus as well. This fits well with zones of interest from the previous sample of direction arcs changing with time of birth of Jupiter to Sun. A time of 19:32 places the Jupiter to Sun with the status increase on 15 November 2002 to Archbishop of Quebec and Primate of Canada.

This then gives direct Jupiter to Uranus in the present.
Image

What this shows was almost a Sagittarius Ascendant(starts at 19:33) and natal Jupiter in the 9th. And also a recent sign change of the progressed moon into Leo.

For these reasons I offer 19:33 as a time of interest regarding rectifications.

this caught my eye...

quoted from Zodiact Image Handbook
3rd Degree Sagittarius

First Image, Outer Symbol

A temple. On its front one reads the inscription 'Our Lady of Compassion' (Notre Dame de la Misericorde). Before the porch stands a woman with a 'nimbus' like a madonna, whose hands are prolonged by fluid rays. She spreads her arms in a gesture of protection towards two groups, one of devoted friends on her right side (left in the picture), and the other of menacing enemies.

Interpretation

This is a very fine symbol in the sign of Sagittarius. It is an image of profound long-suffering, patiently borne with heavenly goodness. We can see the Sagittarius grail in here. People with the degree rising are attracted in a sensitive, feminine way (Cn.), back by tradition (Cn.) and the inner and outer temple of their faith (Cap. fore-axis), to demonstrate and verbally express (Ge. opp. Sag.) their high ideals (Sag.) of mildness and well-wishing (Jup.).

In religious communities they may ascend to the highest positions, but most of them are ordinary lay-preachers, work in hospitals, or do other kinds of health work. They may be merely sympathetic and devoted people who just radiate goodness. As such one might almost call them holy (from whole). Theire field of action is often quite large(the rays from the hands). They may do well as educators or as the enthusiastic centre of a communitiy, a church, or university. They have a missionary tendency and their aim is to care of the spirits and souls of those for whom they feel responsible.

On a lower level of cosmic awareness, the symbol of the temple may degenerate into a fanatical zeal for the beliefs of a sect, which they will propagate against all reason (Ge. opp.), and demonstrate with a 'holier than thou' attitude(neg.Sag.). In this case they have to experience how their severity(Cn.-Cap. fore-axis) causes opposition on the one hand, and emotional adoration on the other. The lesson of this degree is that the admirers and the enemies are all outer projections of their own inner attitude, and that the two sides ought to become united. This happens when the emanation from the hands caused by their heart-power, becomes so strong that it encircles both left and right groups.

Within this iamge is embodied the esoteric knowledge of good and bad (Ge. opp. Sag.). These people need to stand above both extremes and sympathise with all persons(Sag.). They are distinguished by their inner wisdom and their smiling composure that can calm the most troubled mood in others. No weakness of faith is to be detected in them. Their hidden sexual passions and lust for money (neg. Tau.-Sc. hind-axis) should have been conquered from within before they speak about it in public. By their superior intelligence they can stimulate others to high attainment. Although this life may be difficult for them, it should none the less be one of humility and service (Vi. sq.), and of detachment, with the total sacrifice of the lower ego (Pi. sq.). They can do this radiantly and graciously, because they know they are carried on an eternal inner structure composed of the thoughts and prayers of saintly believers from the past, present and future.

For this they may be hated by those who envy(neg. Sc.) their growing fortune and peace of mind (Tau.). They may be gossiped about, ostracised, even stoned, or attacked by terrorist groups. Their spiritual strength can be so invincible that they can bear and transfrom all these negative elements. In the strength of theire inner faith they are able to forgive the most painful insults and hurts (Sc. hind-axis). They know that those who hurt others only hurt their own lower self and can only be their own greatest enemy. In fact there is neither left nor right here, and no boundaries to the radiated energy of the heart.

They may have healing hands, and if so would do well to study the Christian practice of the laying-on of hands; also sciences dealing with the use of spiritual energy, such as Reiki, which originally came from Tibet.

Argentines Jorge Bergoglio and Leonardo Sandri offer strikingly different choices
BY MICHAEL WARREN, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MARCH 4, 2013

Leonardo Sandri, who left for Rome 42 years ago, is a Vatican insider who has run the day-to-day operations of the global church's vast bureaucracy and roamed the world as a papal diplomat.
...
Sandri, 69, left for Rome at 27 and never came back to stay in Argentina. Initially trained as a canon lawyer, he reached the No. 3 spot in the church's hierarchy under Pope John Paul II, the zenith of a long career in the Vatican's diplomatic service ranging from Africa to Mexico to Washington.

As substitute secretary of state for seven years, he essentially served as the pope's chief of staff, running the central office at the heart of the Vatican bureaucracy known as the Curia.

"It's hard to find somebody in church circles who doesn't like Sandri. Granted, few might describe him as 'charismatic,' but he's almost universally seen as warm, open and possessing a lively sense of humour," Vatican analyst John Allen wrote in the National Catholic Reporter. "Personal relationships are all-important, and Sandri has a lot of friends."
...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonardo_Sandri
Leonardo Sandri is an Argentine Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He is the current Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches in the Roman Curia, having previously served as Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela (1997?2000), Apostolic Nuncio to Mexico (2000) and Substitute for General Affairs (2000?2007). He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2007.

16 September 2000, when he was named Substitute for General Affairs.
As Substitute, Sandri held the third most important position within the Vatican (after the Cardinal Secretary of State and the Pope himself)

Benedict XVI created him Cardinal-Deacon of S. Biagio e Carlo ai Catinari in the consistory of 24 November 2007.

Bitter infighting
So bitter has been the infighting that internal critics say they have been shuffled out in a bid to silence them and shield the bank's inner workings from prying eyes.

Von Freyberg?s appointment fills the void left by the ousting of the bank?s previous head, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi. The bank?s board of directors fired him last year for failure to carry out "the primary functions of his office," according to a Vatican statement.

The stories vary wildly. Tedeschi's critics say he was an erratic, negligent manager who alienated staff and blocked efforts at reform. But his supporters, and Tedeschi himself, say he was fired because of his efforts to lift the bank's veil of secrecy.

Regardless of where the truth lies, his sudden departure undoubtedly came as a disappointment to Pope Benedict, who had approved his appointment to the job in 2009 with a mandate to bring in a new age of transparency.
...

http://www.thetablet.co.uk/latest-news.php
...
Some Italian observers have surmised that Cardinals Sodano and Tarcisio Bertone - bitter rivals inside the Roman Curia for the last several years - have made a sort of non-belligerence pact to keep the non-curialists from capturing the papacy. The logic is that it would be better for the rivals to join forces and make modest reforms rather than risk allowing outsiders the chance to take more drastic action to re-order the Church's central bureaucracy.

It appears that the first bloc would be interested in seeing Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, Archbishop of Sao Paulo and a former official at the Congregation for Bishops, as the next pope. He is one of only five cardinals on the commission that oversees the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR or Vatican Bank). The other bloc seems to be coalescing around Cardinal Angelo Scola, Archbishop of Milan. However, it is likely that neither will be able to get the necessary 77 votes and a compromise candidate will be elected.

12
There is a saying "He who goes in (to the conclave) a Pope comes out a cardinal." In other words, the favorite rarely wins.

From a purely nationalistic standpoint, I'm rooting for the American, Timothy Dolan, but it is doubtful any American will be Pope in the near or perhaps far future. Peter Turkson has a chance because the percentage of Catholics in the sub Sahara region has grown from 1% in 1910 to about 14% in 2010 and one major problem facing the Church is dwindling membership. Dolan could be picked (in part) in an effort to revive American Catholicism ("My unruly flock" according to John Paul II) or perhaps Turkson to "Show us how it's done."

A bit of anecdotal history. The original conclave was in the late 13th century. The general Catholic population had grown annoyed with the political goings on and enduring periods of several years without a Pope. Popes were selected by political leaders before the conclave. So the people locked the cardinals inside a building and told them they wouldn't be allowed out until they selected a pope. To speed things up, they only fed them bread and water.

So the idea occurred to me that perhaps, in the US, we could do something similar with the Congress ....
