A page of Hipparchus’s star catalogue has been found in an old Medieval manuscript. It’s been dated to roughly 129BC and from the star data coordinates given appears to be more accurate than Ptolemy’s observations, also shows Ptolemy did not simply copy Hipparchus’s catalogue.

The parchment is a palimpsest, new technology allows researchers to read the various underlying layers of text that were scrapped off by later scholars. The article claims there are many old texts scattered among European monasteries that may hold a variety of “lost??? texts waiting to be discovered.
