Yes. I'm glad to see the quotation marks, though, as the tropical reference was limited to the ayanas (northern/southern courses) of the Sun and, by extension, of the other planets -- there was no other use of the tropical signs.
The words only look the same if transcribed without diacritics: one is sāyana, the other Sāyaṇa (retroflex 'n'). _________________ http://www.martingansten.com |

I think it has been established beyond reasonable doubt that horoscopic astrology did enter India from the Hellenistic world. Personally, I don't think that is a problem. It doesn't detract from the achievements of Indian astrologers past or present.
Ancient texts speaking of divisions into 12, 360, 720 and so on is hardly surprising, as it is a matter of observation that the year consists of roughly 12 months or 360 days and 360 nights. It doesn't seem necessary to connect this to the much more specific ideas of the zodiacal signs and their planetary rulers. _________________ http://www.martingansten.com |
