Seems like Volguine was quite correct. Hecate was the dark moon goddess linked to the dark or new moon. Neo-pagans today seem to be very aware of this:

Wikipedia on the goddess Hecate:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hecate

She is linked to crossroads, night, death, ghosts and witches which would fit the dark of the new Moon.

Volguine links the new moon in nativities to all kinds of tragedy, misfortune or pathology. In particular he cites early deaths, accident victms, murder victims, murderers, mentally ill, sexual deviants etc. You get the picture!

Thank you, Mark.

I started a reply over 24 hours ago and then set it aside. Here it is. The New Moon was what grabbed my attention first:

What's interesting is the dark of the New Moon. The Sun/Moon conjunction is in the 4th house, the midnight house. There's some imagery of the dark and hidden here. Of course, the same Sun/Moon 4th house conjunction would have different imagery and energy behind it in Aries than it does in Pisces, so obviously the signs do play a part. [I had started out with a comment on not giving too much importance to the signs, in reference to the recent Aquarius topic.]

The 4th house is the house of the home, father, basements, and buried things. The AstroDatabank note says ?Gacy had confessed to burying most of his 33 victims under his house, with four dumped in the river . . .? and . . . ? . . . he was the son of a machinist, a drunk who beat his wife and terrorized their three kids.? Yes, that angular Mars is going to be a major player and it is applying conjunct Jupiter, (traditional) ruler of the 4th house. Jupiter is also the Lord of the Asc so it will be very descriptive of the chart native. [What I had in mind was the Mars/Jupiter combination.]

I read in Hand`s WShouses that New Moon implies Fortune and Spirit in same sign.
Hi Jorge,

Since the lot of Fortune and Spirit are calculated from the position of the luminaries and projected from the Ascendant the lots appear in the same positions according to the lunation cycle.

New Moon= both lots in proximity to ASC
Full Moon= both lots in proximity to DESC
Quarter Moons= lots opposite each other in proximity to 10th & 4th houses

..or you to Hellenistic astrology :)

Consistent with medieval astrology Volguine suggests the 8.5 degrees before the Sun are the most malefic for the Moon ( corresponding to the 28th house). As you have probably deduced Volguine?s lunar houses are not equal in size abnd correspond to the light of the moon.
even if it is a not a traditional thread we can find something older.

If the Moon is under the Sun'rays and its light is destroyed and it is not seen, then it's corrupted but it is beneficial for one who desires theft or treachery or something which is kept secret...

Malefics in the angles is called sarpa yoga (serpent configuration) and it is also a shrapa (curse).

Notice the rakshasa (demonic) nakshatras of the planets in this one's chart, in the angles. The Sun and Moon are in Pisces in sidereal as well, however notice the characteristics of the nakshatras the cursed luminaries are placed in. This one also has Scorpio rising with the ruler taking part in the sarpa yoga on the 1st/7th axis as well as the nodes in the 4th of mind and the new moon in the 5th.

So CharlesManson is a murderer because Moon and Saturn are in Capricorn in an angle?

And what about Sutcliffe the Yorkshire ripper

http://www.astrology-and-science.com/a-murd2.htm a good example of how astrologers misjudged Gacys chart. They ignored angular planets. What beats me is that people identified with Marcel Petiot s chart. The guy had Scorpio rising and Mars conjunct Pluto in 8. WSH would show it more clearly with Mars in 8 and Saturn out of sect http://www.astrotheme.fr/astrologie/Marcel_Petiot

as an add up would you be fooled by this?
