KEPLER'S ASTROLOGY

The next edition of Culture and Cosmos will be a special double issue, guest edited by Dorian Giesler Greenbaum, and published under the title 'Kepler's Astrology' (Culture and Cosmos Vol. 14 no 1 and 2).

This is a 330 page first ever study of Johannes Kepler's practical use of astrology which sheds new light on a vital period in the history and development of modern astrology.

Kepler was one of the great astronomers of the 17th century.
His writings on the theory of astrology, which he thought could be reformed in line with ancient Platonic and Pythagorean principles, have been published, and have been extensively studied. However, the ways in which he actually worked with horoscopes has never before been examined. This is a must for all students of astrology.

The volume includes a translation of Friedericke Boockmann's paper on 'Johannes Kepler's Horoscope Collection', and translations by Patrick J. Boner, Dorian Giesler Greenbaum, J Cornelia Linde and John Meeks ranging from Kepler and Michael Maestlin's analysis of their son's nativities to Kepler's weather calendars of 1618 and 1619, and his correspondence and interpretation of Wallenstein's horoscope in 1624-5.

Culture and Cosmos is published in association with the Sophia Centre, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Official publication is on 30 March 2012 and copies will be mailed out during April.

Details on how to purchase are available here: http://www.cultureandcosmos.org/currentIssue.html

Well done to all those involved!

Very much looking forward to this one here, Deb!

Only a few years ago, Ken Negus had his full translation of "Tertius Interveniens" published in the United States with little fanfare:

‘Kepler’s Astrology: the Baby, the Bath Water, and the Third Man in the Middle: the First Complete Translation of Tertius Interveniens and Other Astrological Writings by Johannes Kepler’ Earth Heart Publications, 2008.

When it is considered together with this latest issue of Culture and Cosmos, the portion of Kepler's astrological corpus to be available in English will have dramatically increased within the space of four years.

I recall reading at the Culture and Cosmos website late last year that a major stimulus to this latest volume was the recent publication of a volume in the long-running periodically-issued edition of Kepler's collected works containing his astrological manuscripts:

Kepler, Johannes, ed. Boockmann, Friedericke; Di Liscia, Daniel; under mitwirkung von Von Matuschka, Daniel; Wieland, Hans ‘Gesammelte Werke’ Band XXI, 2.2: Manuscripta Astrologica; Manuscripta Pneumatica’ Verlag C. H. Beck, München, 2009.

I believe that this provided the source material for many of the translations in it.

Congratulations to all involved!
