New Zealand's prime minister says at least 65 people have died after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch. John Key said the toll was expected to rise further, adding: "We may be witnessing New Zealand's darkest day."

The tremor struck at 1251 (2351 GMT on Monday), only 10km (6.2 miles) south-east of the city and at a depth of 5km (3.1 miles), causing widespread damage. Mr Key said the emergency services were working as fast as they could to find people trapped under the rubble.

The damage is said to be far worse than after the 7.1-magnitude quake on 4 September, which left two people seriously injured but no fatalities.

The angular Jupiter is strongly configured in the prior Capricorn ingress as the ASC and MC ruler and forming an applying conjunction to Uranus. Mercury (Lord 4) is Rx in the 10th house and squaring Jupiter/Uranus. Mercury is on the fixed stars Shaula in the sting of the Scorpion. According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Mercury and Mars. Venus is Lord 8 and located in the 8th house by sign division. The Moon is separating from an opposition to Pluto and applying to an opposition of Mars and a square of Saturn. The Moon also trines Lord 8 (Venus).

The event chart of the earthquake has the nodes on the same degrees as the lunar eclipse on 21st December. Transiting Jupiter at the time of the quake was on the degree of Mercury (Lord 4) in the Aries ingress chart. In that chart Jupiter was also angular and squaring the MC. Transiting Jupiter was also square the Moon in the Capricorn ingress chart.

Have a look at the recent lunar Eclipse chart for Christchurch Nz (21-Dec-2010) and the recent full Moon chart for that same location (18-Feb-2011). They both carry an even clearer message.

Yes these are always relevant. The idea is to put up some initial delineation so others will contribute their own analysis...... So perhaps you can expand on your comments?

If we look on the Aries Ingress Chart we see Venus in Ariesn in 2nd house and squaring NN. There is no positive aspect to Venus and this may lead us to the ideea of some financial losses for that NZ on this year.

Mars the ruler of 2nd house is in Leo in 5th house. But counting from 2nd house the 5th house is the 4th ... using derived house systems. And we can say that all things related with buildings, properties can be the source of the financial loss.

The earthquake took place when Saturn retro was on exact opposition with Venus in Aries chart. Also Jupiter was transiting Mercury the ruler of 4th house in Aries chart. We see that Saturn and Jupiter combined acted as a trigger for Aries chart.

As an interesting fact: the progressed Moon on Aries Chart for the moment of earthquake was on 8 Gemini: on exact Venus-Mars midpoint. And we noticed already that Mars and Venus are quite important for NZ on this year.

It's just a brief analysis to start the discussion :)

I agree that the Jupiter (conj. Uranus) theme is strong in the preceding ingress charts. I also note that in the event chart the asc-ruler Venus is in the 9th house, in square and mutual reception with 9th-ruler Saturn, which is essentially strong but accidentally debilitated on the 6th cusp (with the Moon adding in its focus).

This brings to mind that media coverage has focussed a lot of attention on the collapse of the Cathedral - and this destructive 9th house symbolism is particularly resonant to the name of the city: Christchurch.

I may be seeing things this way because my daughter is emigating to Christchurch in about 3 weeks and she had plans to do volunteer work in the Cathedral. (I'm not supposed to be looking at charts or the news about this anymore in case I worry) But I've been told that there are hundreds of earthquakes every day in that area, and I don't think we've seen the worst of this yet, unfortunately.

I'd like to offer comfort to you as mother that she will be alright but..as you pointed out...the worst may not be over and who knows what will happen next...let's hope it is over. She must be a very strong-minded gal to still want to emigrate, and, to help out once she is here. We need people like her so thanks Deb for lending her to NZ. If she ever needs somewhere to stay or contact, we are here.

Below is the 21-Dec-2010 Lunar Eclipse chart for Christchurch, Nz.
The Eclipse lies across the Asc/Desc axis, which makes it very significant for this specific location.
Image
The Lunar eclipse was highlighted by the Full Moon (18-Feb-2011), just several days before the event. Below is the full moon chart for Christchurch, with angular Uranus smack on the chart's desc, lunation Mc/Ic axis exactly aligned with the lunar eclipse axis, and lunation south node smack on eclipse chart Asc.

The earthquake occured just as tr Uranus activated the eclipse it by entering the 30th degree of the zodiac, thus making a square to the eclipse axis, while the transit lunar nodes exactly aligned with the eclipse degree on 29 dgrees Gemini/Sagittarius.

The full moon itself took place at 29+ degrees Leo/Aquarius, an anretic degree and a nodal one. The full moon was triggered as tr Mars hit the full moon degree by opposition.

For whoever is interested in Uranian astrology:
In the Full Moon chart, Uranus was exactly square TNP Hades (destruction), which created the following planetary picture on the 90 deg dial (at Christchurch):
Aries Point = Mc/Asc (time and place) = Uranus/Hades (Unexpected destruction taking a toll of life).

Hello Mark,

I am curious as to why you chose Auckland for the ingresses. Whilst Auckland is by far our biggest city its Wellington that is our capital city.

I live in NZ but a long way from Christchurch.

I have now managed to get hold of all family and friends now too and all safe as are their families and like most people I talk to down there they are shaken up and have huge messes to clear up. All my family and friends have varying levels of damage tho none have unlivable houses, work places are a different story for some and thus jobs are at stake - but none of that really matters, everyone is very grateful for their good fortune and that they and their loved ones have come thru alive.

The death toll still 71 but recovery is just starting, the death toll is expected to rise markedly - about 300 still missing tho a lot of course are mislaid and probably not missing, they are trying to sort the list out. They have been concentrating on getting possible live people out and continue to do so but hopes are almost faded in most major sites.

So many specialised people pouring into Christchurch from round New Zealand, specialised teams continue to arrive from various countries from round the world, so much has been put in place and the city is humming, the organisation is spectacular. Tourists and visitors have been flown out yesterday morning, a lot of residents are heading out of the area to friends and family else where. Air New Zealand are offering $50- flights to anywhere in NZ which is great.

TV news report just now are talking about a possible live person under rubble in collapsed church in another part of Christchurch, they continue to desperately search for survivors.

Kind regards Ineke

Hi Ineke

What can I say? I screwed up.

My apology to you and all New Zealanders out there. I am generally good on capital cities (even obscure ones) but I have gone badly wrong this time. The map I displayed should have been a clue as it highlighted Wellington.

I dont have time to upload new charts just now but I will correct the charts when time allows.

Thanks for pointing this error out.

Just checked the charts for a Wellington location and it only changes the Capricorn ingress by less than half a degree with 21,58 Pisces rising as opposed to 21,37 located for Auckland. The Sag MC changes from 20,38 to 20,39. So despite the mistake it fortunately doesn't seem to have any significant impact on the delineation already offered.

Hi Aquastella

With two disasters occurring under the Dec eclipse (the floods in Brisbane, Queensland), I set up a chart for that location. The Sun/Moon were angular there too.
