Volcanoes-General Reports 1 by Mark I have decided to create this ongoing thread to record data and information for those looking into the astrology of volcanic eruptions. I am not going to personally attempt to delineate the data presented myself. I tend to think we need the bigger context of things like eclipse, ingress, pre-lunation or national charts. However, I still think its important to record this information for those interested in researching this topic. _____________________________________________________________ The Columbian Volcano Galeras has erupted several times over the last few years. The most recent eruption was on January 3rd 2010 when over 8,000 people had to be evacuated from its vicinity. The wikipedia link below gives the times for various eruptions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galeras ____________________________________________________________ The eruption of the Icelandic Volcano Eyjafjallajoekull on April 14th 2010 became a major international news story with significant disruption to flights across Europe and across the Atlantic. This subject generated a thread on its own and members are invited to check that thread out for more information. http://skyscript.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5291 However, the first eruption of the volcano actually occured on March 20th 2010 at approximately 11.30pm. 63N35 19W23 ( Source: Andrew Bevan) This was the first eruption from the Volcano Eyjafjallajoekull after almost 200 years of silence. A second eruption occured on the evening of April 14th and this is the cause of the current cloud of ash which grounded flights across Europe. _____________________________________________________________ Late on Thursday, May 27, 2010 Guatemala's Pacaya volcano erupted, shooting columns of ash and debris up to 1500 feet into the air. The volcano then began to pelt lava and rocks onto the surrounding countryside. At least two people were killed in the initial blast (one of whom, was a TV reporter, who was killed by a 'lava bomb' while covering the event,) and 65 were injured. At least 2000 people were forced to flee their homes. The eruption soon began raining ash onto the nearby capital, Guatemala City, forcing the closure of the country's main international airport and prompting President Alvaro Colom to declare a 'state of calamity.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacaya http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/latin_ ... 186112.stm Here is the event chart for the eruption of the Volcano at 20:00 local time on 27/05/10 14? 22? 51? N, 90? 36? 4? W I already devoted a thread to this event as well as the subsequent hurricane and flooding that beset Guatemala. http://skyscript.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5425 _____________________________________________________________ The Tungurahua volcano erupted violently on 08h47 local time on May 28, 2010, producing an ash plume rising about 10 km above the crater and drifting SW until the Gulf of Guayaquil. Tungurahua (5,023 m) is located in the Cordillera Central of the Andes of central Ecuador, 140 kilometres (87 mi) south of the capital Quito. Coordinates: 1?28'1"S 78?26'30"W http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tungurahua The flanks of the volcano were showered with incandescent bombs, and ballistic projectiles fell into inhabited areas such as Chonglontus, Manzano and Yuibug on the W and SW slopes. Pyroclastic flows descended the western and southwestern flanks into the sectors of Mapayacu, Yuibug and Choglontus. The eruption produced loud cannon-shot and rumbling noises that were heard at far distance; the Geophysical Institute noted that many people in the NE provinces of Ecuador even thought that these sounds came from (also active) Reventador volcano which is nearer. The activity remained at peak intensity for some hours and started to decline at around 13-14h00 on Friday. Flights were disrupted in Latin America due to the plume of volcanic ash produced by the volcano. Here is the event chart [ _____________________________________________________________ Volcanoes of Kamchatka The Kamchatka Peninsula (Russian Far East ) is one of the most volcanically active places on earth, second only perhaps to Iceland and Hawaii. In this part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire", there are over 100 active volcanoes (the Smithsonian Institution lists 109) and about 30 volcanoes that have erupted recently, in addition to hundreds of smaller monogenetic vents (i.e. that have formed during one single eruption). The active volcanoes form a 700-km long volcanic belt from Shiveluch in the north to Kambalny in the south. The vigorous volcanism on Kamchatka, like that of the adjacent Aleutian and Kurile island arcs, is produced by the subduction of the Pacific plate under the E margin of the Eurasian plate. During the past 10,000 years, at least about 30 very large (so-called Plinian) eruptions have occurred in Kamchatka, i.e. eruptions that have ejected more than 1 cubic kilometer of magma. With this record, Kamchatka is by far the place on earth with the greatest frequency of large explosive eruptions. The most active volcanoes on Kamchatka are Klyuchevsky, Shiveluch, Karymsky and Bezymianny. 2010 Eruptions: http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/en/volc ... kamchatka/ As thou conversest with the heavens, so instruct and inform thy minde according to the image of Divinity William Lilly Quote Mon Jun 14, 2010 10:15 pm
2 by Mark Tens of thousands of of Indonesians have been evacuated during the last week to emergency shelters after fleeing an erupting volcano on Indonesia's western most Island of Sumatra. Mount Sinabung, some 60km (40 miles) south-west of Sumatra's main city Medan, had not erupted for 400 years. Officials issued a red alert after Mount Sinabung began to spew lava shortly after midnight local time (1900 GMT) on Sunday August 29th. Since then there have two subsequent eruptions with the last on September 3rd. The force of the third eruption is the strongest so far and could be felt eight kilometres from the volcano in the North Sumatra province. Mount Sinabung sent a tower of hot ash more than three kilometres into the sky on Friday, sending thousands of residents fleeing to safety for the second time in a week. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-11181857 Ash and acrid smoke from the volcano have blanketed villages and crops. Local people arriving at refuge centres were covered in grey ash, many had their faces covered. Government scientists acknowledged they had made no efforts before the mountain started rumbling last week to sample gases or look out for rising magma or other signs of seismic activity. Experts claimed they were too busy with more than 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, a seismically-charged region because of its location on the so-called "Ring of Fire" ? a series of fault lines stretching from the western hemisphere, through Japan and southeast Asia. Mount Sinabung is near Lake Toba, a 100-kilometre long volcanic crater that some archaeologists believe almost wiped out the human race when it erupted 69,000-77,000 years ago. The Indonesian archipelago nation has recorded some of the largest eruptions in history. Earlier this month four people went missing after the 1,784-metre Mount Karangetang erupted on the island of Siau, in North Sulawesi province. The explosion of Mount Tambora in 1815 buried the inhabitants of Sumbawa Island under searing ash, gas and rock, killing an estimated 88,000 people. The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa could be heard 3,200 kilometres away and blackened skies region-wide for months. The blast and the ensuing tsunami killed at least 36,000 people.
