orbs of transits 1 by Debbie Are transits over when they are done approaching and conjuncting or are they still valid once they start separting? For example: A's sun is one degree Aries Saturn is now at two degrees Aries - how strong is the transit now?[/b] Quote Fri Dec 04, 2009 4:31 pm

Aries) then it could be stronger. Again it all depends on the natal condition of both planets: are they in aspect with each other (either by sign or degree), and what is the condition of both planets (dignity, reception, sect, etc). By simple transit I mean [in the case of your example] Saturn conjuncting A's Sun only once; by triple transit I mean Saturn going over A's Sun 3 times: direct-retrograde-direct, since Saturn is going up to 4?39 min. in Aries and then retrogrades to 27?50 min. in Virgo and will pass over again A's Sun when it starts its direct motion. As to when the transit is over, I work with a 1? orb applying and separating; other astrologers around here might see things differently. However I do treat the period of retrogradation as being active and not subjected to the 1? orb. Following on the example of A's Sun at 1? Aries, I would consider the retrograde period [from Jan. 13 2010 to May 30th 2010] very important and depending on its probable manifestation [+ or -] advise my client accordingly. james Quote Fri Dec 04, 2009 5:54 pm
3 by Julie Rimmer I would say the transit is still in orb, you can treat transits like you treat a natal aspect. If you are born with Sun in Aries conjunct Saturn with a 6 degree orb, astrologers would still consider this an aspect, and this is my reasoning for extending orbs with transits. Planets approach and you begin to feel it's energy enter into awareness. I do think we have some psychological (don't be scared of the word ) preparation. Transits don't just turn up, they are part of cycle that unfolds. The energy builds until it reaches a climax and an inner or outer event may happen. The particular planetary issues reach intensity as the transiting planet passes back and forth 3 times. Depending on the orbs you use, a natal aspect has influence up to 8 degrees either side. I use over-sized orbs up to 10 degrees. "A man's character is his fate". Quote Tue Dec 29, 2009 4:45 pm
4 by Atlantean Though there may very well be truth in the idea that transiting orbs can have such far-reaching effects, for practicality, the 1? orb seems to be the most prevalent. (not that that means it is right) There are many systems that have MUCH SMALLER orbs and can give much tighter timing. As an example, Topocentric Primary Directions mature in under 0? 11' of arc for the conjunction and opposition and under 0? 6' of arc for the other aspects. (MAXIMUM time orb about 2 months and 1 month respectively.) I recently was involved in a rectification for a long-time astrologer friend (name omitted for confidentiality). [long-time in this case meaning that he has been into Astrology since the early 70's]. After the rectification, my friend brought up another "incident" in his life that had a profound effect on him, whereby a friend of his had died....it even was the initial thrust for him to "turn to" Astrology. Events not included in the rectification are a good subsequent test for the rectification, obviously. Upon looking at the Topocentric Primary Directions for the given date, three stood out very strongly: Pluto conjunct Venus (0? 0' orb) 11th Cusp conjoining Saturn (0? 0' orb) Uranus opposite Ascendant (0? 4' orb) Transits, do, of course, work...but often it is hard nailing down the timing of related events. (especially when we have a triple-pass, as well as two stationary "moments" to contend with...) In terms of efficacy, I would list: 1. Topocentric Primary Directions 2. Secondaries 3. Aspects derived from the Progressed Sidereal Solar Return 4. Transits 5. Age Harmonics Take care...and good luck in your studies... Atlantean Quote Wed Dec 30, 2009 7:22 am
5 by PFN I think that sign ingress can be revealing sometimes (especially in secondary, more so for the Moon). Sometimes, events happen long after an aspect was exact. I can not be so secure as others on this, but my opinion is that it somehow relates to a "lack of reality perfection" in comparison to the astrological model (meaning that even if we have 0? 1' orb conjunction, since we are talking about transmission of light between planets, it's hard to measure when exactly that will trigger something considered "worthwhile" to our perception). Obviously, we have a guideline, and that's "the tighter the orb, most likely it is something happens", still, if it's within sign, it asks for a deeper look, especially when a lot of hits is happening at the same time. Still, as probably constantly mentioned by older authorities, we should always search for a promise in the radical chart before stating or troubling over anything. Quote Thu Dec 31, 2009 5:32 am
reply 6 by Debbie Thankx for your detailed replies. I am an early cardinal sign and am getting lots of hits. I can see by your thoughtful answers that I am going to have to take my time in reading your responses. I can tell I am going to learn a lot which is why I love this forum. Deb, I was wondering, I usually get notifications when I have contributed to a topic. I didn't this time. I, will of course, check my spam and see if something is going on there, but I was wondering do you think I didn't get a notification because it was so long between responses? No, that shouldn't make any difference. It might have gone to a spam folder, but check that you still have the thread set to notify you of replies. Another thing to consider - the forum will only notify you once of a reply, until you visit the forum, even if more replies are made between the notification and the visit.
