Two new translations by James Holden

1
I just noticed from http://www.astrologers.com/new_books/ that James Holden's translations of (1) Astrologia Gallica, Book 16, by Jean-Baptiste Morin and (2) The Introduction to the Science of the Judgments of the Starsby Sahl ibn Bishr have now appeared.

Other translations by Holden expected to appear this year include Astrologia Gallica, Books 17 and 25; The Judgments of Nativities by Abu 'Ali al-Khayyat (new edition); and Four Treatises of Masha'allah. Next year should see the Introduction to Astrology by Paul of Alexandria and the Compendium of Astrology by Rhetorius.

I wish my own retirement may be as productive. :'

I just received my copy of Book 16 The Rays and Aspects of the Planets

Morin differentiates between rays emitted (Pouring forth their virtue) by the planets and the aspects that are formed when the rays co-mingle. Physically, we don't believe this, but astrology can be looked at metaphorically, too. He not only discusses all the usual features of aspects, application, separation, dexter, sinister, etc, but handles antiscion, combustion, doryphory and a few other techniques here and there.

Typical of Morin, he addresses arguments by his contemporaries and dismisses them. What is an interesting sidelight is that he discusses astrologers of his day that must have been influential (why else would he mention them?), but are virtually unknown to us such as Jofrancus Offusius, the German, and Giovanni Bianchinini. Just think of how impressed your friends will be when you bring up those names at your next cocktail party.

Holden is in his 80s and still going strong. Maybe we should all learn old languages and translate them to keep us as productive in our old age as he is in his. We owe him big.

( off topic )
Last time I tried to translate an astrological text, it took me hours to tranlate a few pages, and I got aches in my head, eyes and back. So, I think the reason for his energy must be otherwise, maybe his milk.

J-B Morin

Morin is certainly opinionated. Another Al-biruni or James Wilson 8) Most of the time he argues his case with the facts but his reply to the doctrine that the natal chart can predict the fate of the relatives verges on the sarcastic. Made me laugh anyway

James Holden informs me that his latest translation from Morin's Astrologia Gallica, Book 25, is now available:
http://www.astrologers.com/new_books/
This translation by James H. Holden focuses on Morin's rules for making mundane predictions through the use of ingresses and lunations, along with the use of solar and lunar eclipses for that purpose. Also includes Jean Hieroz's statement of Offusius's rules for planetary strength and Hieroz's use of Morin's methods to predict the outbreak of World War II.
