Mystery Chart No. 11 Revealed

1
While others have focused on Mercury and even Uranus, the Lord or Lady of the Geniture, and temperament, all of which (except maybe Uranus, but it is on an angle) are of vital importance in this chart, what prompted me to choose it was the sign on the ascendant, but then I know who the native is. Virgo is the virgin, cold and dry (melancholic) and a sign that gets a lot of bashing on astrology sites. Virgo is symbolic of neatness, order, nit picking, and purity. Lots of Virgo jokes are around about their repressed sex lives, or even lack of interest in sex altogether. That sign on this ascendant provides a delicious irony, for our native, is Hugh M. Hefner, founder of Playboy Magazine, Playboy Enterprises, and chief cheerleader for the Playboy lifestyle.

How can it be, that the man almost instantly associated with sexual license and photographs of naked women has a Virgo ascendant? Is the ascendant sign afflicted (yes)? Does it have a debilitated ruler (yes)? Or is Virgo misunderstood? All of the above. Hefner perfectly displays the meaning of Virgo, just not the way we would expect it. His personality is dull. He was once voted one of the most boring celebrities. In my opinion he completely lacks charisma, at least in public, but he succeeded, and whether we like him or not, that success is undeniable.

Basics first- temperament: Like so much in this chart, this one isn?t easy to determine. I used two methods: John Frawley?s as outlined in The Real Astrology Applied (a modification of Lilly?s technique), and Dorian Greenbaum?s method given in her book Temperament Astrology?s Forgotten Key. Frawley?s method uses the Lord or Lady of the Geniture and there is some dispute as to what that might be. Using Frawley?s definition, the planet with the most essential dignity that can act, we have two sensible choices, Sun and Venus. Using Venus he is predominantly sanguine with a good dose of phlegm and no choler. If we use the Sun as LoG he is predominantly sanguine with a pretty good balance of the others.

In cases such as this I?ll also use Dorian Greenbaum?s method as a control, as she does not use the lord of the geniture. This way he comes out closer to Frawley?s method using Venus ? predominantly sanguine with a good dose of phlegm and no choler. Since desire (the phlegmatic principle) is so obviously part of Hefner?s nature I felt justified in using Venus as lady of the geniture, while admitting this is pure hindsight astrology.

His personal mannerisms are melancholic as befitting his ascendant sign, but it is hard understand him as lacking fire, since he is a very successful businessman. He started a new venture with $8,000 of borrowed money, plus the money gained by selling his furniture and turned it into an empire becoming quite wealthy in the process. It is hard to accomplish that without initiative. So we go to the significator of the manners. This is the planet or planets that most engage Mercury and the Moon. I would nominate Jupiter, dispositor of the Moon, and Mars dispositor of Mercury and they are conjunct by sign in the 5th house of pleasure and creativity. The planets combine initiative and success resulting ni his accomplishments.

Since these planets are not highly dignified we?ll look at Ptolemy?s description of them when they are not in glory: ? ? mischievous, reckless, cruel, pitiless, seditious, quarrelsome, perverse, calumnious, arrogant, avaricious, rapacious, inconstant, vain and empty, unsteady, precipitate, faithless, injudicious, inconsiderate, senseless, and officious, inculpators, prodigals, triflers, altogether without conduct, and giving way to every impulse. ??

Not every word fits, but many of them do at least judged by the standards of the 1950s when he began his ventures. So where is the Virgo? It?s everywhere.

Many years ago, Hefner agreed to discuss his philosophy with the conservative political pundit and publisher William F. Buckley, Jr on Buckley?s TV show Firing Line. Buckley began the show with something close to the following question. I recall the intent more than the exact words, so there will be no quotes:

You believe in sexual freedom for men and women in all circumstances, (At this point Hef was nodding sagely), yet you don?t allow the Bunnies in your clubs to engage in these practices. Why not?

Bingo! Buckley nailed the Virgo nature, unintentionally of course, while Hefner squirmed. Buckley was right. The Bunnies would be fired for so much as having a cup of coffee with a club member, never mind dating one. Sexual freedom was for all except Hef?s storied employees. Why the hands off rules? Why are the Bunnies to appear sexually available, but in fact are untouchable by his edict? Because Hefner liked them that way ? pure.

I haven?t looked at a Playboy magazine in decades. And unlike the vast majority of readers who only purchased the magazine to read the articles, I looked at the photos. Every one of these girls was more wholesome looking than Shelly Fabares of the old Donna Reed TV show. They were all studying for their PhD in philosophy and just happened to have their clothes off when the Playboy photographers dropped by. They were living works of art even if it required an airbrush to accomplish it. One thing Playboy playmates and Bunnies were not and that was slutty, like so many of the women who decorated the ?men?s magazines? of the era. If we believed what our lying eyes were telling us there were gobs of females out there without a single flaw on their bodies, not a blemish, not the hint of anything out of proportion and, unlucky us, Hefner had them all. Playboy?s Playmates were about purity ? a special kind of purity that Hefner and a lot of others wanted to ravage, but it was purity nonetheless. The theme was Snow White gets naked and it raked in a lot of money.

The Moon and Venus are the two planets associated with women in any man?s chart. In this chart they are both in the sensual sign of Pisces, where Venus is exalted, and they are in the 6th house of servants. Women were served at the Playboy mansion, and by that I don?t mean someone waited on them. The 6th is also the house of small animals and I note in passing that Lilly gives rulership of rabbits to Venus and the Moon (CA p 82 & 75).

What does Hefner really think of women? Well, I might be old fashioned in my outlook, but compared to him I?m the soul of feminism. One of his long time partners, Barbie Benton, in the 1960s behaved in public like a cross between a Stepford wife and the doll of the same name. In interviews in later years she appears to be an intelligent, thoughtful woman, qualities that remained hidden back then. Ms Benton was approached by Hefner when he was in or near his 40s and she was 19. When he asked her out she replied that she didn?t date anyone older than 25. He responded famously, ?Neither do I.? He was unconcerned about conversation afterwards.

But, you say, Hefner put a woman in charge of Playboy Enterprises when things were going badly. Yes he did, and she performed brilliantly - restoring Playboy to its glory days. This woman, however, is the one woman off limits even to the king of hedonism himself. ? his daughter Christie. Barbie Benton never got a job offer.

Mercury, the ascendant ruler, is interesting in this chart, too. It is disposed entirely by the fiery planets, Mars and the Sun. It is conjunct the ASC by antiscion, is retrograde and posited in the house of partners and others. It is not a dignified Mercury, but I always defer to Mercury in Aries as Einstein had it. Hefner was married twice and has four children. [Hey guys, can you imagine having Hugh Hefner as your Dad - and taking your high school dates to the Playboy Mansion?] Pisces is on the cusp of the 7th, and that sign is the detriment and fall of Mercury.

Mercury, and Mars as significator of the manners appear to provide the choler necessary to succeed in business. Love him or hate him, he started with nothing and made quite a bit out of it. He had battles to fight with formidable enemies including, but not limited to, the United States Government. But is he the leader of the sexual revolution?

Although his influence can never be discounted, his timing is as much responsible for his success as anything else. It must be stated that this is true for many successful people. As Bob Dylan informs us, ?The times they are a changin?? Or they were changing beginning in the 1950s. Hefner?s magazine and ?philosophy? came about the same time as two truly revolutionary changes in society. One was underway and the other would be of supreme importance in Playboy's near future. WWII was behind us and exceptional affluence was about to rise. Affordable labor saving devices, plus successfully taking the role of provider while their husbands were at war gave women food for thought regarding their traditional roles. And behind the scenes research was going on in the pharmaceutical industry that would produce a drug that also coincided with Playboy?s rise to prominence ? the birth control pill.

It?s no fun being promiscuous if you?re always pregnant as a result. Fear of pregnancy had as much to do with sexual morality as any fear of eternal damnation. Fear of disease helped, too, but antibiotics took care of that ? temporarily. Remove the fear and sex can become as sought after by women as by men, and Playboy philosophy or no, without the cooperation of the female of the species, all sexual revolutions are mere fantasy. Playboy?s success rose as women?s acceptance of that sort of ?entertainment? rose. Hefner didn?t lead the sexual revolution as much as he cashed in on it. The Sun disposits and trines his part of fortune from the 8th house of other people?s money. His ASC/MC ruler, Mercury doesn?t seem to have the clout necessary to imagine and then lead such a ?revolt.? And his Lady of the geniture is in the 6th house.

Dr, Laura Schlessinger, a contemporary radio shrink, disliked by many because of her traditional values, made an interesting observation once, and attributed it to her father. She said that society?s morals would never rise higher than those accepted by its women. Put another way, she once told a male caller, ?You men amaze me. You willingly go into combat with bullets whizzing by your ears, and bombs bursting all around you, yet you?re all afraid of your wives.? Right on both counts. Hef may trivialize women, but it is women?s consent that makes his lifestyle possible. Women changed their minds. We can debate whether or not this was a good thing, but we cannot dismiss its importance.

In this light, and noting Mercury's role as trickster. perhaps Hefner simply put one over on society. He taught us that sexual freedom puts women right back in the bedroom where he thinks they belong. He did it openly and flamboyantly and he made a pile of money taking his pleasure at will demonstrating anything is possible including the Virgo hedonist ? the ultimate astrological irony.

and i thought that this person has led the life of Casanova and a person who brags about his sexual affairs and he turns out to be a magazine editor of Play Boy. So, all the sex i saw was in his mind. :???:

I had noted that this person had no proper contacts to Mercury and Moon and i was of the opinion that if he is a wirter then he must not be an intellectual. So, it seems that my choice of Sun was utterly wrong. May be Venus was the key.

I dont ascribe Virgo ascendant to a person who is Saint, only they have explanation for every thing and they think that whatever they think they are basically pure. My personal experience with Virgo ascendant and Virgo Sun people has been very bad. Maybe it has to do, me being Pisces Sun.

So, as far as i get that this person was an editor or owner of a questionable magazine but not favoured such things in his personal life. :???:

I don?t understand all the Virgo fuss really ? he only had his ascendant there, no planets in it. It is Mercury that deserves the emphasis, for ruling the asc, MC, and being so prominent by angularity.

It?s amazing how the whole chart is so absolutely fitting now we know who this is :) I recently watched a drama on Robert Maxwell, and at one point it crossed my mind this could be his chart (quickly realised it couldn?t be, though I would love to see his chart, I imagine it is very dramatic). Hefner may not have been an intellectual (is he dead now?) but he had a certain intelligence about how to be successful at what he was doing. Interesting chart Tom ? thanks for putting it up.

I doubt it was only in his mind. In fact your first thoughts were correct. I think Kim wrote an article on Cassanova, and a comparison might be interesting.

But for the record, I was thinking like an American not realizing the whole world might not know about Hugh Hefner and Playboy, so here is a capsule summary.

Hefner started a magazine in 1953 he named Playboy. His purpose was to extol the virtues of hedonism. Despite intellectual pretension, the magazine is best known for its high quality photographs of nude women provacatively posed. The idea of a more or less mainstream magazine publishing such photos and features flew into the teeth of 1950s morality in the US, but sales and subsequent ad revenues proved that the morality may have been more than a bit superficial. Hefner's magazine became so popular that he exapanded into night clubs where the waitresses were scantilly dressed as the magazine's symbol, rabbits or bunnies as they were called. Playboy also had or still has a gambling casino in Las Vegas if I recall. There was a TV show at one time, too.

Hefner, something of a recluse, lived in a huge home in Chicago dubbed the Playboy Mansion. It was known for its world class stereo system (doesn't that sound quaint), indoor swimming pool complete with beautiful nude bathers, and its lavish never ending parties. Hef practiced what he preached. He could afford to.

Hefner had his problems with the authorities notably with the US Postal Service which refused to carry his magazine to subscribers on the grounds that using the mails to transport pornography was (and is) against the law. He fought that and other battles to keep his ship afloat.

Hefner is alive and well and probably would make an excellent poster boy for Viagra.

As for the Virgo fuss. It is the stereotype that attracted me to the chart; the sterotypical Virgo as hedonist is tough to ignore. His is a good lesson in not paying too much attention to such stereotypes. I kid a lot about my Virgo wife because at times she seems to fit the archetypal Virgo, but like all people she is her own unique person that happens to have some obvious traits associated with her Sun sign. She has other Virgo traits, too like wilingness to help others and an exceptional capacity for self sacrifice.

There are probably people far worse and far better than High Hefner that have a prominent Virgo signature in their charts. We may not agree that his lifestyle is worth emulating, but he is not an evil man. He is what he is. His Creator will undoubtedly have the last word on the merits of his life.

There are no coincidences department:

As these words are written, Hugh Hefner is on Larry King Live discussing his current situation living with three gorgeous women, all of whom look about the right age to be dating material for my sons, and Hefner was born only a couple of years after my father.

The Banner that floated across the TV screen asked: How does Hef do it?

The caliber of woman hasn't changed any. When Larry King asked one of the women, "What about fidelity?" She replied, "What's fidelity?" She didn't know the word.

What can I say? I'm a fan.

I think the chart fits. The Virgo Ascendant is totally obvious to me, look at how he presents himself. He always seems mild mannered and very classy, which is odd because he is in the same business as Larry Flint. I love your observation about the women of Playboy. You're right, they seem perfect. Not a flaw about them. They are intellegent and thoughtful women, professional, and most importantly like you said, they aren't pornstars, they are Psych majors and Animal Rights Activists. Untouchable. They might as well be virgins, classy one and all. These are girls you could bring home to mother. Maybe thats why Playboy hasn't been universally condemned by the public as "just" a nudey mag. "It's art!" "It's classy." "I just read the articles" There is something about it that espouses an almost european sensability about nudity - it isn't a big deal. Besides these girls don't really have sex, they're like angels, or statues carved from marble, modern day michealangelos. They just sit around naked and braid their hair. The Virgo tendencies towards class, perfection, sophistication, and to a certain extent modesty(for an adult magizine, defineatley) are all prevalent in Playboy. These women are "Bond" women. You know, double-o-seven. And who was the best James Bond? Sean Connery of coursch, with a Virgo schun!

Another thing that stood out in this chart to me was the MArs/Jupiter wide conjunction in the 5th. To me that sounds great! Having your actions(mars) blessed with good fortune of Jupiter is nice enough, but in the 5th house of bona fortuna, what a life! When I see this aspect I think, what a lucky guy. And I think that is what most men say to themselves when they see Hugh Hefner.

Now I know you won't believe me, but when I saw this aspect, I thought about who that is famous describes this? So I looked at the birth data. Chicago, so he's american. 1926, so hes old. Who is famous and old now that probably had a damn fortunate romantic life? When I first saw the Mercury I thought like many other that this was a journalist or on the radio. But the retrograde was odd too. Then I swear, Hugh Hefner just popped into my head. I got a weird feeling in my gut. It was weird. So anyway I finished my post and I checked the Birth time. I couldn't believe it. I was right! I know you'll never believe me. :)

I love reading your post-chart write up's Tom. Great writing. Ah, and the Picses moon comes clean in Hef's favorite quote: "What dreams are made of." Or something like that anyway.

So what is the deal with Mars and Saturn dipositing the entire chart? I see no mention of these planets in anyones interpretation, yet it provided the key in Oswald's chart when every planet was diposited by a succendent 8th house mars.

The 3rd house Saturn in Scorpio may manifest in a way that isn't readily visible, it being cadent. The 5th house mars in Aqua shows itself in your write up about how Hef believed in sexual freedom, that sounds like 5th house mars aqua. But it is in mutual reception with the scorp saturn of close communication, perhaps validating that Hef's girls were free, but not to him and his saturn. Interesting stuff.

7
You must be ahead of me because I don't have Larry King on right now.

Whats fidelity? Is that 5th house Aqua or Venus in Pisces? Or 7th house Pisces? I can tell you it is indicitive of the dread URANUS in the 7th house. :)

This is a good question that deserves a bit more than I'm able to give it at the moment. I note that Mars and Saturn in Oswald's chart are in worse shape than Mars and Saturn in Hefner's, while admitting there should be more to the answer.

This also brings Morin to mind. He said that no two men experience the planets the same way, and he said that went for twins, too.

Whats fidelity? Is that 5th house Aqua or Venus in Pisces? Or 7th house Pisces? I can tell you it is indicitive of the dread URANUS in the 7th house.
I don't know what is where in the chart of the woman whose vocabulary didn't include the word "fidelity." And I'm not sure Uranus in Hefner's chart means he likes dumb women, even if he does. For the record, I don't have the outer planets on my computer display or at least not on the desktop computer. They're still on my laptop. The reason for this has nothing to do with astrological snobbery. I've been working with charts from Morin's Astrologia Gallica and those charts obviously would not have the outers, so in order to make it easier for me to understand him, I decided to eliminate the clutter. I've done this before, and usually end up putting them back as it makes communication easier with other astrologers who do have them on their displays and printouts.

I do note that Uranus in Hefner's chart is conjunct the DSC. This would make it significant in some way. I associate Uranus with divorce and upheaval. On the 7th cusp it would be divorce and Hefner's been divorced twice. I have little use for the more common delineations of the outer planets as I find them vague and superficial. Saying something like (I'm making this up) "He has Uranus in the 11th so he has unusual friends," doesn't tell us very much. Noting that someone's friends are "unusual" is a value judgment that is clearly in the eyes of the beholder in most cases. Even when it isn't, every member of Hell's Angels doesn't have Uranus in the 11th. While I realize they can be useful at times, I don't think the outer planets contribute much of value most of the time. To each his own.

Thanks for the feedback.

Bingo. That's the lack of Choler (by the Greenbaum method). Choleric people usually have charisma.

Again, this is a really interesting chart. One thing worth noting are receptions and dispositors: the Ascendant ruler works in a completely masculine domain ruled by Mars and the Sun. As you noted, women (Venus and the Moon) are in the house of servants. Venus has diginity where she is, but she is debilitated both in the place of the Ascendant degree and the Ascendant ruler degree! Mercury rules both Ascendant and the MC - so this man is a publisher, his life work has been in communications (kind of). Venus is the almuten of DC (using Plolemy's term and triplicities and all three triplicity rulers) and she's in detriment of Mercury - maybe that's one indicator of Hefner preferring his women not too intelligent.

I agree with that Tom. But here Uranus is smack on the angle, in a partile trine to Saturn on the 3rd cusp, and conjunct Mercury, ruler of the asc and MC. I think Uranus speaks volumes in this chart, though it needs this kind of placement to be given serious attention. But then we can?t really make judgements based only on a planet?s placement in a house, can we? No matter what kind of planet it is. We have to look at more than that to get the relevant theme. Otherwise we would make twee little comments like ?Mars is young men and it?s in the 5th house of pleasure so he must be a playboy?. Damn, wrong example ?

12
Hi Deb,
I agree with that Tom. But here Uranus is smack on the angle, in a partile trine to Saturn on the 3rd cusp, and conjunct Mercury, ruler of the asc and MC. I think Uranus speaks volumes in this chart, though it needs this kind of placement to be given serious attention.
Yes I agree with this, but what kind of attention? Every astrologer, modern and traditional knows, for example what it is that Mars represents. No one seriously tries to alter what Mars has meant for a couple of thousand years. But once we pass Saturn it becomes a free-for-all. Uranus is revolutionary; Uranus means eccentric; Uranus means "change;" Uranus means freedom, and with all that Uranus rules a fixed sign. Does anyone care to guess exactly how many political "revolutions" resulted in more freedom for individuals? I can only think of one. The rest of them give us people like Napoleon, Lenin and Stalin. It's bad enough when astrologers act as though the cosmos arranges itself to reflect our personal viewpoint, but do the planets' meanings operate that way, too? And whatever I say about the ambiguity of Uranus, it goes double for Neptune. So if we posit that Uranus in such a position as it is in Hefner's chart is meaningful (and I agree that it must mean something), my question is how do we apply it when there is so little agreement on its significance?

Then there is the problem of the signs. Using Uranus as a modern astrologer does, as an indicator of personality, is senseless when a planet spends seven or more years in a single sign.

"Uranus in the sign Pisces indicates intuitive abilities and a scientific curiosity about the workings of the unconscious." Sakoian and Aker The Astrologer's Handbook
Is this nonsense or what? If there is a catch-all phrase in astrology it is "intuitive abilities." I don't know anything, so I must be intutitive. A scientific curiosity? As opposed to what? What is a non-scientific curiosity and what planet rules that? The workings of the unconscious is another one. There are millions and millions of people who spent billions of dollars and countless hours studying the "workings of the unconscious," and all this time all anyone had to do was ask Hugh Hefner who could answer them intuitively.

I don't want to rant, even though I've already started. I can and will take the outer planets seriously in delineation when there is some consistently sensible use for them. For now I'll notice them like I try to notice the fixed stars, i.e. when they are on angles and/or tightly conjunct a real planet, and I will pay little attention to the sign. And I'll only do that once I returnthem to my computer.
