I’m starting a new topic here so that it’s easier for others to follow this. The ideas here started at the end of this other topic Friend Deploys to Iraq.

The question at hand is about what constitutes prohibition? In the chart under discussion at that time, Steven quoted Masha’allah and said that he thought that the Moon is not prohibited by Mercury from its opposition to the Sun but that Mercury was prohibited by the Moon from it being conjunct the Sun. I hope I explained his position here.

Steven,

Could you give us all a citation as to where this quote came from?

I read it several times and I don’t see how you connect what Masha’allah says with your what you say about prohibition. What Masha’allah seems to be saying is that it is only correct to speak of the faster planet applying to the slower, and that it’s not correct to say that the slower one applies to the faster. And he also says that planets are only considered to have joined when they reach each other’s exact degree (by being conjunct or in some aspect.)

So could say more about how you got from Masha’allah’s quote to what you said about prohibition?

I suspect that the Arabs had a different and more complex system of how to use aspects but I’m not at all sure about this based just on the quote.

Lilly gives an example of prohibition that is similar to the one in my chart in the original topic.
Quote:
The second manner of Prohibition is by Aspect, either Sextile, Square, Trifle , Opposition, viz. when two Planets are going to Conjunction; as Mars in 7 degr. of Aries, Saturn in 15 of Aries; let us admit the Sun in 5. degr. of Gemini; he then being more swift than Mars in his diurnall motion, doth quickly overtake and passe by the Sextile dexter of Mars ( and comes before Mars can come to Conjunction) to a Sextile dexter of Saturn: This is called Prohibition by Aspect, in the same nature judge if the Aspect be Square, Trine, Opposition.
CA, page 110 (I’m using the MS-Word version of CA so I hope the page number is right.)

What Lilly does not say is if it is the Sun that prohibits Mars from being conjunct with Saturn, or is it that Mars prohibits the sextile between the Sun and Saturn. Or does it do both?

When I look at Lilly’s definition of prohibition, besides the obvious part about one planet beating another out as if in a race, Lilly also stresses that this has to involve the significators in what the querent wants. If Jupiter represents the money that the querent wants and Mars from prohibits Jupiter it’s contact with the ASC ruler, then the querent does not get the money. At least in his definitions, Lilly sees prohibition as something that can deny something favorable to a person. But can it prevent something destructive from happening, or just lessen it?

I’m going to look at Lilly’s examples and see how he uses prohibition because its in his examples that he really shows how he works.
