Experiences with Neptune

1
I don't usually focus on transits much but wanted to ask forum friends if they have had any notable experiences with neptune (transits or other contacts).
Last year when transiting neptune squared my venus I had the powerful urge to play the lottery, which I did for several weeks. I am not a gambler. I even worked in a casino during summer breaks in college and thought it really silly. But there I was buying tickets really thinking i was going to win big. Of course I didn't. The urge subsided as neptune retrograded.

Now it's back and I can't stop thinking about going to London. Seems like a relatively benign obsession compared to gambling. (Neptune is transiting in my 9th, natal venus in 12. Venus is under the beams in gemini.) I have been 1 click away from buying the airline ticket but I am worried this is another neptune delusion and the trip will be a disaster. When I checked the day I picked to go, mars is conjunct uranus in the 9th. I became convinced this transit is trying to kill me. In addition to fantasy and delusion I associate neptune with loss, so doing anything under a neptune transit doesn't make much sense.

At any rate, the intensity of the feelings made me curious about other people's experiences with this strange planetary influence.

Hi Donna

I do feel you have a somewhat negative view of Neptune. Yes, that planet can make us run after a pipe dream, but it can also inspire us to leave our daily routine behind and go on an adventure that greatly expands our horizon.

It would be interesting to consider how you generally relate to Neptunian influences. For that, we would need to consider Neptune's position and aspects in your natal chart, of course.

Experiences with Neptune (as with the other planets) can vary widely. One fairly recent example would be that of somebody close to me somewhat surprisingly discovering their interest in Christianity when Neptune transited their Pisces Moon. Christianity (as we know it) being associated with Pisces/Neptune in some ways; as C.G.Jung has elaborated on, it can actually be considered the religion of the Pisces Age.

And when I say 'surprisingly', I mean, from a conventional perspective. However, since I knew that this transit was coming up, I considered such a development a possibility long in advance - remote as it seemed at the time. ;)

Hi Michael,

I do consider Neptune a malefic but I exaggerated when I said I was afraid the aspect would kill me. I know planets don't kill people. My Neptune is retrograde in the 4th house with a partile trine from Mercury in the 12th. I'm rather a fantasist by nature and consider it something of a waste of time. I am curious about Neptune manifesting in other charts like your example, which is pretty classically Neptune. I went through a religious period in my 20s under a Neptune aspect and now consider it kind of creepy and quite delusional, but not without some value. I understand what religion provides people with much more insight and sympathy.
You have a valid point about Neptune expanding our horizon but I feel like the Neptune expansion always ends with a thud. That is the risk of any aspiration, I just feel like Neptune aspirations have the fall built into them.

I have heavy Neptune in my chart and I don't see as a very positive influence in some cases either. When it opposed my Saturn I went through an especially difficult period in my 20s where I lost any sort of drive and ruined my dream to become a doctor. I went through a very bad depression, questioned all of my beliefs, and my personality switched from an idealist to a cynic (and that has stayed that way). I would say that Neptune in contact with Saturn to me has been the most notable influence as far as negative transits. It was a confusing time when I did things and felt things that in hindsight seem naive, weak and stupid. It has since squared my Moon quite a lot and I haven't noticed it much but I have natal Moon conjunct Neptune in the 6th and I have had some serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis twice, during the transit.

I have Neptune i Scorpio in 1st house (Libra AC though) and only remember Neptune's transits squares to my natal Mercury and than Sun in Taurus in 8th and those aspects happened somewhere in 2008-2012 coinciding with Great recession and my chronically unemployed status. Well, the good side of that experience was intensified sexual life with my wife, like escape from sad reality.

Hi Tanit,
I can relate to all of this other than the allergies. When Neptune hit my moon which is square Saturn natally, my beloved Aunt who introduced me to astrology died. It was strange and unexpected and we couldn't get straight answers about what happened, very Neptunian. I was devastated and obliterated myself on alcohol for months.

When Neptune went direct by progression my sister contracted a rare autoimmune disease and was in the hospital for 6 months. I was there almost every day since she was totally paralyzed for half that time and the hospital had already made one serious mistake in her care. Up to that point in my life I was bursting with optimistic hopefulness. I was only 20 years old but I came to feel very old and weary and sad. The scales fell from my eyes, as it's said, when I came face to face with so much tragedy.

I have neptune transiting my 3rd house and at the same time, squaring my ascendent Part of this is studying playing the piano but I know I have been somewhat negative about old age. Later this year and early next year, I have solar arc neptune aspecting my mars (rules 4th house) and venus (rules both 10th house and 5th and 6th ) Wondering how this will turn out AMY

Must admit I struggle to include Neptune and Venus in any Analysis I do because I can't really get a handle on what they bring to the Party.

But I'm glad you asked this question as I am keen to get to terms with Neptune more.

Classically it is seen as something that breaks down barriers, for good or ill, by weakening boundaries.

Definitely related to Drugs and Alcohol and Escapism, and therefore the Movies and the likes me feels.

Neptune's in Pisces just now. Is that Healthier ?

Hi Donna:

I too am convinced that Neptune is trying to kill me with its opposition of my LoA from the 8th house, conjunct Saturn. My progressed chart isn't helping either unfortunately, so every time something "medical" happens I figure "this could be it!" So far, so good, though! :D

I don't think yours is quite so afflicting unless you may bankrupt yourself perhaps with Neptune influencing your thinking about money (Venus). Also watch out for long-distance clandestine love affairs via fax. :D What houses does Venus rule (if you wish to disclose)?

More seriously, I do associate hard aspects from Neptune with the kinds of things that you have mentioned. It does seem to create very compelling, very odd situations that end with a thud and I would also say that the scales have fallen from my eyes quite a bit in the past few years - painful but in some ways liberating.

It has also engendered a tremendous creative output on my part as I took up writing fiction for the first time (Tr. Uranus and Pluto may have played a role as well), particularly the writing of screenplays (movies=Neptune). Also I took up the study of astrology! Whether any of this will come to fruition is hard to say as my chart isn't very fruitful in terms of gain in general.

Hi Moonbright,
I'm beginning to think that what is 'scary' about Neptune as opposed to, say, Saturn is the promise it carries and the desire it activates. No one with any experience of Saturn is going to be deluded that something wonderful is happening. Saturn energy forces you to deal--no escape. That energy is more productive for escapists like me. Venus is L4 and 11.

You are on the money about the money--London is not cheap and according to all financial advisors in the world I should be saving every penny at my age. But I'm taking the plunge and bought the ticket. One thing worse than making a mistake is living in a permanent state of indecision. Vacillation, confusion, flip-flopping, Neptune anyone?
I'm sorry about your health worries but it sounds like you have tapped into what people say is Neptune's gift--creativity. Good for you!

Thanks to everyone who responded. This has been helpful.

Hi all. Recently I have heard some negative discussions on Neptune but I do feel like it can be the most beautiful influence in a chart. I have some harmonius Neptune aspects in my chart that make me an idealist and give me those rose tinted glasses but honestly I tend to like this vision for it makes this dull life somewhat more fascinating, poetic and full of mystery. So what if the bubble bursts someday? It gives us a nice time for as long as it lasts... :D
